I assume this is a new world cichlid?

If it's not an Oscar or Discus (as they have their own forums), but a cichlid from Texas, Central or South America... This is the place to be! Terrors and Devils and Jacks oh my!

Another fish that shouldn't be offered for sale :( That article says up to 20", but I've seen much larger. They're probably more common here in NZ that in the US, we get a fairly constant supply of regular Giant Gourami's and RTGG. I've seen a couple that were over 24" and probably still growing, as they were under 10 years old. 100 gallons is in reality far too small for a fish of this size. A friend of a friend had hers in a 180g and it made the tank look tiny. They can't turn very easily, being quite a thick-bodied fish, so nede a lot of width in their tank. I've also seen pics of the aftermath of one going straight through the end of a tank made from 10mm (1/2") glass, with only 5 feet of room to buid up speed. They're massively powerful fish.

Which is probably why I've never seen one of these, I regularly see pacu's being sold around here and there is a lfs that has a "rescue" tank thats practically full of pacus I assume from the people who buy them at "The Not-so-Smart Pet Store" and freak when their 25gal tank is busting at the seems.

This particular fish was in a restaurant fish tank that had to be at least 500 gallons probably much more (it was very hard to judge the width of the tank being that just one side was visable. However it was about 8-10 ft long and quite deep. It had 2 of these monsters in it that just dwarfed the huge pacus I've seen and and number of blood parrots and red severums

On a side note I've decided that is the size tank that I want and I will have soon :)

It's really good to hear of one thats being given the room it needs to survive :fro: And I don't blame you for lusting after the tank, I've done that myself from time to time. Like the 40,000L planted tank being featured in this months PFK magazine. It's not a tank, it's a private little ecosystem :o

There is a monster gourami at one of the LFS I prefere to deal with. The tank it is in should be bigger, but they certainly put extra effort into making the home they provide him clean. That boy must be at least 2 foot long.

I am 100% sure that it is a red-tailed giant gourami. Personally I think that they are gorgeous fish. The red-tails can be very pricey and difficult to find. In some Asian culture they are said to bring luck and god fortune, much like a flowerhorn. Very cool picture!

that vid reminds me. my dad works with alot of carpenters being a flooring salesmen and he was telling me of this super rich guys house that he had to do a flooring measure for. i guess the outer wall of the livingroom was all glass, 2 layers that had water flowing between them. he said it looked like you were in a cave looking out through a waterfall that poured into a lake. the whole livingroom floor was glass/acrilic and you were standing ontop of a huge fish tank. i would have loved to have seen all the fishies swimming under your feet. must make you feel like god or something being able to walk on water. i would love to have something like that some day. anyway, dont people normally put giant gouramis like that in big backyard ponds ive seen them on youtube but never in a tank. probably for the reason of it busting your tank.
1 tiger oscar, 1 tire track eel, and 1 pleco in 55gal
14gal with tetras, molys, julii catfish, and 1 small pleco
one black cat one white and charcoal with one blue eye and one yellow eye

OMG I was talking to my boyfriend recently about how cool it would be to have a fish tank UNDER the floor where you walk atop it and see all the fishies below you!!! We figured that cleaning it would be very difficult...?
Plus we'll never be that rich LOL! But I imagine my cats and dogs would enjoy it as much as us :-D
