Help Please!

Postby FishDogg on Wed Jul 14, 2010 12:26 am

Both of my aquariums (70 gal and 36 gal) are infested with some sort of white larva type bug thing....

I know I am not very good at discribing it.... they are really small and have to look at the glass pretty well to see them moving along the glass and in the water (not so well since both tanks water flow is over 600 gph)

I need to know what to do, what to get, how to get rid of them, keep my fish from getting them (though they're in the water and well we all know fish swim in water)

Hi Lance...It sound like planaria worms and they come from over feeding. They will not harm your fish so no worries there. They are a sign to cut back on feedings and with some large water changes they will disappear.

I didn't think I over fed them. I remove all leftovers from the tanks and fed the next day. I have been feedin' one at a time lately.

I currently feed just once a day. Is there any suggestions I should do? As you can tell I saw them and freaked. I'll do 75% water change later today as it is after midnight now. Or will that be too much?

I had an issue with them as well. I have cut back on feeding and kept the water good and I haven't seen any issues yet.

Keep in mind that if you have an O they are messy eaters and can thrive on little stuff that's there. They were really obvious when I dumped new water in and they got stirred up from the bottom.

I don't blame you from freaking out ...strange site seeing all those buggers. :o

When you do water changes do you vaccum the gravel? Try feeding half of what you normally do for a bit and see what happens.

Just so we are sure can you take a picture?

WOW, that is INTENSE. You have quite a collection.

My community tank would love those. They were eating the ones that became dislodged like they were candy.

Thanks for posting a picture. Planaria it is. Do some 70-80% water changes and they will disappear. Like I said the good news is they will not hurt your fish. :)

yeah i've heard of this before and they definitely arent bad for ur fish, they live in the gravel and basically are there just to eat leftovers. just do large water changes and they should go away after a while. good luck, they may not be harmful but nobody wants to have visitors scrutinising your tank haha! good luck.
